On Balance

Antipathetic revolution
or covert resistance
whenever we choose
can there be sides
when we all hide behind
matching patchwork blankets
of rhetoric and belief,
woven black and white filaments
of light holding the shadow
of our righteous claim
to irrefutable social justice

all sides are obliged to believe
we are on the right side of history
but even if I am correct
will I be on the right side of herstory
when it comes to survival
we all become abundance misers
wretched for blessings

risking the pursuit of happiness
becomes the only reason to prejudice
the asylum of ambivalence
bare the stakes of new growth
endeavour to hazard
the stars of a new year
seduce the enterprise of Spring
release the endorsement of Winter

I don’t know if it is arrogance
need or faith feeding my belief
in the impact of my intentions
on the lives of my baby butch granddaughters
whose worlds are yet to be born
but I draw a deep breath, spin fortune’s wheel
and cast my spell
