Summer Solstice Personal Ritual

Back porch ritual

Abundant growth and blooming

Spring moves to Summer

The day of most light approaches.  Some think of it as the first day of Summer, but light and heat have been growing since the Winter Solstice and now is the peak of light.  In Texas, we’ve been in the heat of Summer for a while now.

Its early morning. I sit among the plants, herbs, flowers (and mosquitos) on my back porch.  On a base of dark rich soil, I create an altar of the Great Goddess with vegetables, fruits, egg shells, flower tops, herbs and seeds.  I open myself to the energy of creativity asking for Her inspiration to create.  I take time to breath, come fully into my body and the present moment.  I think of my dear friends as I sing the song “Now is the only moment.”  I sing it for a long time, the woods, my cat, the wind, the birds as witness.

As I arrange each piece on the altar, I am feeling fully alive with the Goddess’ attunement to my process.  I feel nurtured by the centeredness I have drawn in and by the lush nature all around me. I begin to slow. Move with mindfulness. Enjoy this moment.

She is beautiful and powerful in her form embodying the day of longest light and the coming first harvest.  Busy with life that conveys the story of Summer’s zenith, She reveals the Her omnipresent creativity. I marvel at Her cyclic magic that endures the purification of fire and heat, as the forest demands summer fires to thrive and Pele wakes up the islands.

After I complete the altar, I sit in quiet with Her.  I speak to Her about all I am learning about myself and about the complications of my life.  I practice a new meditation I have learned, “I allow my body to be just as it is, and I accept the experience of my body just as it is.”  I repeat it several times, stumbling over the words as it does not come easy for me to say out loud just yet.  I feel safe in my discomfort and vulnerability.  I am with the Goddess.

At this Summer Solstice, I am ripe with changes and a bit overwhelmed.  As her priestess, I know Her process is my process and I am a reflection of her beauty and struggle.  I am grateful beyond what I can express in words or art.  This path sustains me; the Mother feeds us all.

May the Great Mother continue to nourish us with food worth eating, forever.  May we learn to co-create and align with Her no matter our individual beliefs.  May all people and animals find healing and provision in Her loving embrace.
