Sitting in the Mystery

Sitting in the Mystery 3

Recently I gave a workshop on “Endarkenment” at the RGCI Hallows Conference. While researching the concept, I was struck by the mysterious ways in which the Dark can be experienced. It also occurred to me that if one wished to perceive or develop an understanding of the myriad aspects of Endarkenment, one would need to have the patience to sit in meditation, while awaiting the Mystery to reveal itself. Thus, this doll was born.

Note: The original concept of “Endarkenment” came from an article by Molly Remer.

Rain Gaia Foster
I am an ordained priestess, practicing in the Dianic Tradition founded by Z Budapest, for 17 years. Prior to that I was active in women only covens, circles and congregations.

I am a member of The Red Tent Clan in Madison, WI., offering sacred, women born women only, spaces at the National Women’s Music Festival, RCGI conferences and other private locations.

As an artist, I am inspired by the gifts of Nature: earth, air, fire, water, fabric shards, bits of trees and plants, various fibers, and discarded detritus, I conceive and create Goddess Spirit “dolls”. Each one is an expression of myself in the context of a specific moment. Some are political statements, some personal. All come from my spiritual viewpoint as a 2nd wave, radical, feminist, lesbian Dianic priestess.

In addition to my service as ritual priestess, I am also an altar priestess, creating and tending altars within sacred space. I teach that all women should have a personal altar, no matter the size. It is a place of refuge where we can commune with Goddess, within and without. A touchstone for our relationship with Her and a place where we are reminded of who we are, what we stand for and believe.

“For each of us as women, there is a deep place within, where hidden and growing our true spirit rises…Within these deep places, each one holds an incredible reserve of creativity and power, of unexamined and unrecorded emotion and feeling. The woman’s place of power within each of us…it is dark, it is ancient, and it is deep.” –Audre Lorde
